AAI to transfer staff stationed at Mumbai, Delhi airports

New Delhi: After three years of discussions, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to transfer about 5,000 employees working at the Mumbai, Delhi airports to various small airports across the country.
With just two months remaining for the completion of the employees’ tenure at Delhi and Mumbai airports, the airports authority has already started working on the transfer plan.
AAI has around 20,000 employees across various centres. The official said that the transfer of the employees will burden the organisation’s wage bill. “Every employee will add an additional burden of Rs 5 lakh per annum on the wage bill. However, being a government organisation, we can’t ask anyone to leave. So, they will be transferred at the same salary levels,” the official said.
The AAI and its employees have been at loggerheads for three years over the privatisation of airports. The AAI has put these employees on a three-year deputation with the private operators. Though the GMR-led Delhi airport and GVK-led Mumbai airport had offered some jobs, most of these employees stayed away from their lucrative offers primarily due to the fear of job losses.
