Capt GR Gopinath set to take the political plunge

Bangalore: India's aviation entrepreneur Capt GR Gopinath is set to take the political plunge. He will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections either from Bangalore South or Bangalore Central constituencies as an independent.
"I will decide on the constituency within two days after talking to my well wishers," he told ET. Capt Gopinath is expected to make a formal announcement on his political foray later today.
"I think people are tired of partisan politics in this country. That is why I have decided not to be associated with any political groupings. There's a need for more educated and well meaning people in politics," he said.
Capt Gopinath floated India's first low-cost airline Air Deccan almost six years back. In 2007, he sold the airline to Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher, but continues to be its Vice Chairman and the second largest individual shareholder.
Since then he has floated a few start-up ventures including a cargo airline under Deccan Express brand and hospitality projects. Deccan Express is scheduled to start operations in the month of May with a fleet A310s.
