New domestic terminal at IGI to become functional from April 4

New Delhi: The newly-built domestic departure terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport here with enhanced passenger facilities will become operational in two phases from April 4, a senior airport official has said.
"In the first phase from April 4 Jet Airways and Jetlite will start their operations from the new departure terminal building (1D). The rest of airlines would be shifted and begin their operations from April 11," a senior official from Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said.
This means that the airport would only become fully functional for the passengers from April 11.
"The reason behind opening the new terminal building in two phases is that we want a smooth transition and least inconveniance to the passengers," he said.
DIAL is currently conducting an extensive Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) with the help of staffs from Munich airport for smooth airport transfer.
"This would make the airport and airlines' staffs aware of their role and responsibilities which in turn would cause least inconvenience to the passengers," he said. The new terminal, which has 3,50,000 square feet area - almost the double the size of the existing World War II era building, is located between the existing Terminal 1A and the Terminal 1C - the new and upgraded domestic arrival terminal.
As of now, passengers of Air India (domestic), Kingfisher Airlines and MDLR airlines board their flights from terminal 1A, while those of other airlines, including low-cost carriers, have been boarding from terminal 1B.
The new terminal would have better and enhanced passenger facilities which include eight entry gates, 72 check-in counters -- against 32 in the existing terminals, 16 security channels -- against existing four and ultra-modern four level in-line baggage handling system. There would also be 16 self check-in kiosks spread across eight rows of check-in counters.
