Race for posts in airports regulatory authority hots up

New Delhi: A decision on the appointment of the head and two members of the newly-created Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) would be taken shortly, even as 29 senior officers are in the race for the three posts.
Among the senior officials, both present and former, who are in the fray for the three posts include Air India CMD Raghu Menon, former CMD V Thulasidas, former Airports Authority of India Chairman K Ramalingam and Consumer Affairs Secretary Yashwant Bhave, among others.
As per the gazette notification issued, the AERA has to be constituted by March 31, with official sources saying the process could be completed by the middle of this month. With a booming air traffic and privatisation of airports and other infrastructure, the need was felt for setting up AERA to regulate tariff and meet the targets of cost- efficiency and service levels by airlines and other aviation operators. The prime objective of AERA would be to create a level- playing field and foster healthy competition among all major airports.
