New Delhi: Tired of cramped economy class seats on domestic flights but find executive class unaffordable? Air India (domestic) plans to introduce a premier economy class, positioned between the existing economy and business sections that would have wider seats with more legroom but cost just a few hundred rupees more than ‘cattle class’.
‘‘Airlines are cutting costs. But we will do it without compromising passenger comfort. We are considering a premier economy on certain sectors by reconfiguring some aircraft,’’ AI CMD Raghu Menon said.
If the Air India’s this plan materializes, AI (domestic) would become the first domestic airline to have three-configuration seating in India. On foreign carriers, three segments — first, business and economy — are common on most sectors though some airlines have just two even on their foreign flights. Menon has directed that the airline’s cost-cutting measures should not make a difference to passenger comfort. The most innovative move has been on catering. On domestic flights less than one hour duration, it has stopped serving lunch and dinner.
