Chennai: The Chennai airport received Rs 59.60 lakh from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) board for saving power in 2008-09. It became eligible for the incentive after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) exceeded the stipulated unity power factor' of 0.90.
TNEB supplies power to the airport using a 33KV line. And, according to regulations, the airport should maintain a power factor of 0.90. If the power factor falls below the stipulated figure, the consumer is penalised and is rewarded when it goes above the figure.
Maintaining the power factor helps an airport enhance capacity utilisation of equipment and reduce electrical losses. Officials said this was achieved by continuous monitoring of the ten 11-KV substations around the airport. The AAI selected five Chennai airport officials for Chairman's award for innovative excellence for improving management of power factor to reduce cost and also for introduction of power-saving devices.
