Direct flight to Srinagar wings its way to city

Chandigarh: With a summer getaway to Kashmir valley getting easier on the pocket, all thanks to excellent bargains on offer, a trip to ‘paradise on earth’ will soon be just a flight away from the city. Adding to Chandigarh’s list of flying destinations, Kingfisher Airlines is scheduled to launch a daily Chandigarh-Srinagar return flight from May 1.
Officials from the airways told TOI on Thursday that the flight, the first direct one to Srinagar would also connect the city with Jammu. From October 2005 to April 2008, Deccan Airways had kept the city aerially connected with Jammu.
Apart from reviving tourism in the picturesque valley, the proposed Srinagar flight would also benefit defense personnel posted at Jammu and high-altitude areas. As of now, the vast majority of those serving in the forces have to board a train from Ambala railway station, what with only those off to the highest peaks getting a chance to fly aboard the Air Force aircraft that takes off from Chandigarh almost everyday. The flight is also expected to do its bit for religious tourism by coming to the aid of devotees with an easier journey to Vaishno Devi shrine.
