Flying High: Captain Gopinath canvasses for his kite symbol

Bangalore: Low cost aviation pioneer Captain Gopinath on Saturday canvassed for his election symbol, the kite, asking voters to cast their vote in favour of the kite which symbolically stood for freedom.
Addressing media to announce his election symbol, Gopinath, who is contesting as an independent from Bangalore South, said the kite "stood for freedom: freedom of expression, freedom to wear the clothes you want, freedom to dream, freedom to choose your religion and freedom of ideas".
Gopinath, who is making his second foray into politics after 15-years, said he would be distributing a score card where voters could rank their candidates on various criteria and then vote. He would also set up a citizens' committee which would act as a guide on issues.
He called on all volunteers to assemble at his house on April 18 to give shape to this committee.
Admitting that being an independent candidate, he had been restricted in terms of spending compared to political parties whose expenditure limits were higher, he said but "My enemy is not money or Ananth Kumar and Krishna Byre Gowda (his contenders) but the indifference of the large educated middle class to come forward and cast their vote".
