IGI employee injured as conveyor belt gives way

New Delhi: An air India employee sustained injuries after his foot was stuck in a baggage conveyor belt at terminal 1A of the domestic airport on Sunday.
According to sources at the airport, the incident occurred around 4.45 am and it took the officials about 25 minutes to rescue the employee and take him to hospital.
Senior Air India officials refused to disclose the name of the employee. They said he was deployed as a supervisor in the commercial section, adding that he had been sent on a three-day leave to recuperate.
The sources said the victim was trying to manually rearrange the baggage and had got on to the conveyor for the purpose. All of a sudden, they said, a small portion of the belt tore open and his right ankle got stuck in the rollers beneath. An alarm was raised and the belt was stopped. “He was lucky that the rollers were stopped on time,” said an eyewitness.
