New Delhi: The Maharaja has finally undone one of the biggest `mistakes' the government made while merging Air India and Air India. The merged entity was termed "National Aviation Company of India Ltd" or NACIL that many employees refer to as "NAASH-IL" while wishing this name to go away. The airline board has now decided to dump this name and go back to good old Air India Ltd.
"We realised NACIL did not have any brand recall value anywhere in the world while Air India famous or infamous is known globally. So the board has decided to revert to the old name," said a senior official. NACIL, said sources, was possibly chosen to allay fears of Indian Airlines employees who felt the merger was nothing else but Air India gobbling them up.
But this is about the only change of merger that's been undone. The landmark revolving statue of Centaur on top of AI's 23-storey headquarters in Nariman Point or Queen's necklace has been removed. Now structural engineers are testing the strength of the pillar on top of the building where the Centaur will be replaced by the new symbol swan.
