Chennai: Chennai airport will get two state-of-the-art radars and an automated air traffic control system by the end of the year. Making the announcement here on Saturday, Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman V P Agrawal added that the authority would also take up airport development projects at Pondicherry and Coimbatore soon.
"We have sanctioned two radars for the airport. We had called for tenders, but it did not work out. So, we need to initiate the tendering proces again. The radars will be in place by the end of this year," Agrawal told reporters after reviewing ongoing infrastructure development works at the airport.
AAI is also planning to modernize air traffic control by introducing automation. "The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year or in early 2010, will cost Rs 140 crore. The system is already available in Delhi and Mumbai. We will be installing the system in Kolkata and Chennai. We are yet to open price bid for the project," Agrawal said.
Infrastructure development works construction of terminal buildings, cargo complex, extension of secondary runway across the Adyar river -- are going ahead. "There is no hold-up of funds for development of the airort here. But, AAI will consider asking the union government for infrastructure bonds because Chennai and Kolkata expansion works are high-cost projects."
AAI is also constructing a cargo complex for which work has been awarded, he added.
