Mystery surrounding death of air hostess solved

Chennai: City police on Thursday solved the mysterious death of an air hostess with the arrest of a person involved in petty crimes and offences.
Police identified the accused as Sheik Abdullah (22), a resident of Mogappair. Abdullah stayed in a house three streets away from the victim's residence. Police recovered a laptop, a mobile phone, an iPod, Rs 1,500 in cash, a pack of Dunhill cigarettes, a purse as well as a new Air India slipper.
B Niti Kumari (25), hailing from Bihar and working as an air hostess with Air India, was found dead last Saturday night at her residence.
"We made a breakthrough when a shopkeeper alerted us on Wednesday about a person visiting his outlet to sell a laptop. The picture of Niti Kumari set as the desktop background was a giveaway. Police teams immediately rushed to the shop and picked up the accused," joint commissioner of police (Central Chennai) VA Ravi Kumar told The Times Of India.
When questioned, Abdullah confessed to having committed the murder for gain. Later, he was taken to the house where he enacted the crime before the police. Explained a senior police officer: "Abdullah had scaled the compound wall of the building and went up the stairs to the second floor where Niti Kumari was staying alone. He noticed her speaking on her mobile for more than half an hour. He waited on the terrace till she went to bed. After sometime, when she went to the toilet, Abdullah tried to open the door. Hearing the sound, Niti Kumari panicked and ventured out shouting. Suddenly, Abdullah pounced on her and dragged her into the house. He strangled her; she fainted and collapsed. He then went inside and searched for valuables. As he was about to leave, the victim regained consciouness and raised an alarm for help. He strangled her once again to muffle her voice and she breathed her last. He pushed the body underneath the cot and placed two suitcases in front. He left the house and locked the door from outside. He threw the house key from the terrace to the adjacent house and left the place with the valuables." The enactment of the crime has been recorded on a video camera.
