Mumbai: Bagdogra Airport, about 15 kms west of Siliguri town in West Bengal was elevated to the status of international airport yesterday with the inaugural flight of Drukair carrying 79 passengers on board from Paro in Bhutan. The flight was flagged in Paro by S M Krishna, India's External Affairs Minister and landed at 10.30 hrs on the Bagdogra Airport. The Minister, who was to be one of the passengers in the 114-capacity Airbus-319 flight, made some last minute changes in his schedule due to some fresh official engagement, airport sources said. Immigration, customs counters and other facilities needed for an international airport have also been set up, sources told UNI.
Kalyan Kishore Bhowmik, Director, Bagdogra Airport said that Drukair will run four flights in a week - Paro-Bagdogra-Bangkok on Tuesdays and Saturdays and return flights Bangkok-Bagdogra-Paro on Wednesdays and Sundays.
