BCAS launches probe into security lapse at IGI airport

New Delhi: The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has launched a probe into lapses in the security apparatus at the IGI airport here that allowed a US national to carry his revolver in his checked-in baggage and fly to Chennai a fortnight ago.
The aviation security agency is also probing as to how the 58-year-old American, identified as Sellmeyer Larry, entered the airport complex in Chennai to take a Jet Airways flight to Mumbai, official sources said.
He was detained and later arrested following the seizure of an Austrian-made 'Calibre 40' weapon, 35 bullets and three magazines from his baggage, they said. During questioning, Mr. Larry is understood to have told CISF and airport officials that he had carried the same weapon when he flew into Chennai from New Delhi on May 27.
However, the sources said the American had not declared his weapon when he arrived in New Delhi from abroad. As they begun the inquest into security lapses at the Delhi airport, BCAS officials also started questioning the CISF personnel and the ground staff at Chennai airport regarding the recovery of the weapon, they said.
