Bureaucrats can use airlines' free companion offers

New Delhi: Government officials now have a reason to rejoice as they have been allowed to use the 'free companion' offers, doled out by various carriers for overseas travel from time to time, for private travel.
A recent circular issued by the Department of Personnel and Training has modified the earlier order which so far prevented use of mileage points earned by frequent flyers or free companion tickets issued by airlines from being used for private travel.
Following a recent review of these instructions in consultation with the Finance Ministry, a decision was taken by the department to modify them.
The government servants, as per the circular, can "avail of the facility of free companion tickets offered by the airlines for international travel only."
Under the earlier rules, a government servant would have been liable for departmental action if he or she used such free companion offers for private travel of family members.
