Mumbai: Home minister Jayant Patil on Thursday announced that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) will investigate the Rs55-lakh heist at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport last month. He also announced an inquiry into the last four incidents of fire on the airport premises.
A gang of three had robbed 100kg of gold and 40kg of silver worth Rs54.93 lakh from Santa Cruz airport on May 25.
Patil was replying to a point raised by Shiv Sena's Kiran Pawaskar in the legislative council. He put the blame for the heist on Air India and suggested that the robbery took place because the company did not have good security arrangements.
"The company (Air India) did not have CCTV cameras installed despite instructions by the police. Their security guard did not note down the number of the vehicle used by the robbers," he said. "We have filed a case of robbery and the investigation is on."
Pawaskar alleged that an additional commissioner of police responsible for the security at the airport was not serious about his job.
