Contractual workers of Air India in a fix

New Delhi: The contractual workers of Air India are in a dilemma as to who their actual employer is and whom to approach for their day-to-day affairs.
"We do not know who our actual employer is, as we were employed by Alliance Air, a subsidiary of erstwhile Indian Airlines, but we were working for Indian Airlines Limited - Airport Services Limited (IAL-ASL) - a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Airlines Limited," said a member of the IAL-ASL.
Indian Airlines has been merged with Air India. The workers, who have already approached the Labour Commissioner's office in this regard, complain that they face a number of problems in their day-to-day functioning as they are getting salary from one of the subsidiaries and allowances from another subsidiary.
"We are getting salary from IAL-ASL, but for uniform and other things, we are asked to approach Alliance Air," said an employee not wishing to be named.
"Though we are the employees of IAL-ASL, the Picture Identity Card (PIC), issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) - the authority responsible for aviation security in India, says we are employees of Air India," said another employee.
However, the airlines officials say that since Indian Airlines and Air India have been merged, they are now the employees of the company National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL).
The workers had gone on a 10-day strike from June 1. They withdrew it after two rounds of conciliation talks with Additional Labour Commissioner and Chief Labour Commissioner (CLC) and an assurance of a positive step by CLC on June 10.
