Environment Min wants Navi Mumbai Int’l Airport relocated

In what could lead to a significant delay in building the much awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has asked the Maharashtra Chief Minister to find an alternate site for the airport.
The Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has actually written a very strong letter to the Maharashtra Chief Minister saying that they actually must look for an alternate site for the Navi Mumbai Airport. This is because the new airport site is of ecological importance. New airport site includes 150 acres of Mangroves forest.
Interestingly the letter comes on the heels of CIDCO applying for environmental clearances on 16 June and the bids for the airport were supposed to be invited by the end of September 2009, but that might just get delayed.
