High-priced chocolates land airline in trouble

When overcharged for a food item purchased while flying a low-cost airline, most of us would forget about it once the flight landed. However, Jayesh Agarwal, director of a small-scale BPO in Pune, decided to fight for his rights as a consumer.
On November 9, 2008, Agarwal was flying from Hyderabad to Pune via Mumbai on a Kingfisher flight. He bought a packet of chocolates for Rs 50, but later saw that the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) was Rs 30.
Jayesh said, "I asked for a bill against the purchase, which they refused. On reaching Mumbai, I took up the matter with the Legal Metrology department (LMD)."
Ankush Dhanvijay, IPS, Spl IGP, controller, LMD, registered the case against the airline for violation of the provisions in Standard Weights and Measures (packaged items) Rules, 1977, for supplying packaged snacks on board without a bill and sales cost exceeding the MRP.
On June 20, Prakash Mirpuri, spokesperson of Kingfisher Airlines, said, "We are awaiting details. I cannot comment."
