Mumbai: The first cases of airline flight attendants being quarantined for suspected infection came to light on Tuesday.
Two Air India and one Jet Airways cabin crew members have been quarantined in Shanghai and Mumbai. However, the good news is that the Air India flight attendants have tested negative, while the Jet Airways employee, who is under observation, has only a sore throat.
More than 20,000 fliers have been screened in India for the H1N1 virus over the past few days and three, including a Coimbatore woman and her son who returned to the country from the US, have tested positive. It was after one of the routine checks at the Mumbai airport that the Jet Airways flight attendant--who came from Brussels--was taken to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital on Monday.
"She is under observation as a precautionary measure. She was only found to be suffering from sore throat and did not have any other symptom,'' a Jet Airways spokesperson said, adding that the results of the viral tests she underwent were awaited.
The other case took place on May 30 when Air India's Mumbai-Delhi-Shanghai flight landed around 8 pm local time at its final destination. "Soon after landing in Shanghai, the health inspectors, in protective gear, came inside the aircraft for the routine checks. They carried infra-red temperature guns, which they flashed on each passenger's forehead,'' an official said. "A Chinese passenger was found to be having high temperature and so he, along with the in-flight supervisor and a flight attendant (both of whom had served this passenger), was taken for further medical checks. Those sitting in the row behind and ahead of the Chinese flyer was also taken for examination.
