Guwahati: A high alert has been sounded at Jorhat airport following an anonymous threat — contained in a letter — to blow up aircraft belonging to a private airline plying to this Upper Assam town.
Entry for visitors to the airport has been barred for the next 15 days and security checks of employees of the airport have also been beefed up. The screening of luggage has also been made more stringent.
Though officials of the private airlines are tightlipped about the letter, Jorhat superintendent of police Deepak Choudhury said a case has been registered at Jorhat police station.
He said the letter, written in “very poor English”, was posted in Jorhat. “But we are not taking any chances. Security has been tightened in and around the airport,” Choudhury said.
A high-level security meeting was held at the airport yesterday following the threat. Choudhury said the hand-written letter was sent by post addressed to the head of the Jorhat office of the airlines located in a hotel in the heart of the town. “The letter is written on a blank sheet of paper,” Choudhury said.
