New Delhi: Based on the apprehensions expressed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) about the effects of aircraft flying over the Qutab Minar, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has conducted preliminary discussions with civil engineering experts from IIT and other technical agencies in this regard. A study is also being planned to assess the impact of vibrations of the aircraft on the 13th century structure.
A senior ASI official said that after the third runway became operational, aircraft landing on it were passing too close to the 72.5 m high monument and their vibrations could cause damage to the structure. "The vibrations are definitely a concern and we asked DGCA to assess the situation and ensure that there are no problems on that front. Secondly, since aircraft are passing so close to the monument, there is a high probability of one of them straying and hitting the structure. Maybe a new route should be chalked out so that aircraft do not come this close to the monument,'' the official said.
DGCA chief Nasim Zaidi confirmed that such a request had been received and that all concerns raised by ASI would be looked into. "A study will be conducted to assess the seriousness of the situation. If the vibrations are indeed a reason to get worried, corrective measures will be taken,'' said sources.
