DGCA blames Air India pilot for near-miss incident in Mumbai

New Delhi: An enquiry into the recent near-miss incident in Mumbai Airport involving two planes of Jet Airways and Air India has revealed the incident happened as the crew of the latter took the take-off clearance meant for the former as its own.
Informing this in the Rajya Sabha today, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said an enquiry was conducted by DGCA to ascertain the near miss on May 31.
"It revealed loss of situational awareness and also expectancy bias by crew of Air India flight which took take-off clearance meant for Jet as its own and initiated take off."
He said the take off clearance was issued to Jet Airways' Kolkata-bound flight after which it commenced take off from runway no 14. Air India&aposs Delhi-bound flight was issued line up clearance for runway no 27.
However, the Air India flight started moving on the runway for take off.
The Minister said on observing Air India aircraft commencing take off, the controller instructed the Air India flight to hold position.
