HC quashes plea against shifting of airport

Hyderabad: The High Court on Monday dismissed a petition challenging the shifting of the airport from Begumpet to Shamshabad. A division bench comprising Justice B Prakash Rao and Justice R Kanta Rao gave the verdict on a peition filed by Srinivas Reddy, a TV journalist from Saroornagar.
The petitioner contended that the provisions of the Airport Act 1934 provided for closure of an airport by the government but the new Act which came into force in 1994 provided only for establishment of an airport by the Airports Authority of India and was silent on closure of an airport.
The court said the decision fell under the provisions of the statute and the process of construction of new international airport. The decision on the airport’s closure had started a decade ago.
