Steps to scale up airport security

Chennai: Following a government directive, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) at the Chennai Airport has sought security clearance from all ground handling agencies to whom various airport related work has been outsourced.
A meeting to this effect had been convened with the agencies, AAI and airline operators last week and a deadline for July 15 has been set for the agencies to submit detailed reports on themselves.
“This is a routine annual exercise that all airports undertake whereby police clearance is required for agencies to continue their operations,” Airport Director K Nataraj said.
However, this time round, agencies have been given clear mandates to follow prerequisites set forth by the BCAS (Delhi) and Government of India.
Agencies will have to submit detailed information like certificates issued by recognised authorities, company profile with detailed information on owners/directors and employees’ personal information. Agencies will also have to show the receipt of the licence fee paid and letter of confirmation/contract copy from the AAI.
“It is a total check where even the company’s top management has to give personal information apart from its employees deployed at the airport,” an airport official said. Agencies will have to undersign and declare that they have not been involved in any criminal cases in the past.
