Air India perjury trial delayed to post-Olympics

Vancouver: The much-delayed perjury trial of the only man convicted in the Air India bombings has been delayed until after the Olympics.
Ian Donaldson, a lawyer for Inderjit Singh Reyat, on Monday applied for the latest adjournment, saying he was representing one of six accused in a major kidnapping trial that has run much longer than expected.
He told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Mark McEwan that there wouldn't be enough time for another lawyer to get up to speed on the Reyat case, which had been set for Oct. 5. The kidnapping case is not expected to wrap up until December, he added.
The Duncan, B.C., electrician is the only person found guilty in the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182, which killed 329 people, as well as the same-day blast at Tokyo's Narita airport, which killed two baggage handlers. Reyat is accused of lying at the trial of two other accused, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, who were acquitted.
Reyat was convicted of manslaughter in May 1991 and sentenced to 10 years for his part in the Narita bombing.
