Delhi Airport project cost up 50%; DIAL may bear the brunt

Private sector consortium Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) may have to bear the increased cost of rebuilding Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, a cost it had mostly managed to pass onto passengers by way of increased user development fee (UDF). Mint's Rahul Chandran reports that this reversal may happen once the regulator finishes an audit of the project.
There is no regulator in place but the chairman has said that he would be looking at the project prospects that will be submitted by the airport operator based on merit when the time for the review comes in. The cost has already gone up by about Rs 3,000 crore from Rs 5,900 crore that was originally estimated in 2006 and the government is now saying that it could go up even further.
