Jet Airways pilots in Chennai support strike call on Sep 7

Chennai: Jet Airways pilots based in the city have expressed support for the strike call given by the National Aviators Guild, a newly formed pilots' union of the airline. More than 700 Indian pilots of the airline are scheduled to strike work across India on September 7, demanding reinstatement of two pilots who were terminated for registering a union in Mumbai.
D Balaraman, general secretary of the union said, "We had a meeting here on Thursday to explain the reason for the strike and its impact on pilots based in Chennai." All the 39 pilots working at the Chennai base of the airline had agreed to take part in the strike, he added.
Explaining the reason for forming a union, Balaraman said that the management had stopped talking to the pilots' association. "The company told us that welfare associations cannot be used as a platform to represent employee issues before management. So, a union was formed and registered before the labour commissioner of Mumbai."
The office-holders of the guild claimed that the airline was continuing to recruit expatriate pilots without training Indian pilots.
