Bangalore: Close on the heels of 4.3 kg of ketamine being seized on August 3 at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), immigration officials arrested another man on Sunday trying to smuggle the drug out of the country. The destination in both cases was Jakarta.
Police said Tulfikar Ali, 29, from Tamil Nadu, was travelling to Jakarta via Bangkok, like in the previous case. During immigration check, the officials found nearly 7.5 kg of the drug hidden in a box.
Upon interrogation, it came to light that Ali met Jaahir in Sri Lanka during a business trip. The latter introduced him to Rajesh from Bangladesh. On August 2, Ali had gone to Johasi in Bangladesh, where Rajesh gave him the consignment to smuggle it to Jakarta. The deal was clinched for Rs 10,000.
Jakarta is now the hub of illegal ketamine trade, and a major distribution point for other parts of the world. Chennai is emerging as the distribution centre in India, an official said.
