Air traffic zooms for third month in a row

Bangalore: Air passenger numbers soared for third consecutive month in August as local airlines carried 7.54 lakh passengers, 25.8% more than in the same month last year.
As per the statistics on domestic air passengers released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday, last month saw 36.76 lakh passengers take to the sky compared to only 29.22 lakh passengers last year. This jump in passenger numbers came after June and July had seen air travel go up by 5.66% and 21.3% respectively over the same months last year.
Ankur Bhatia, MD of Amadeus, said air passenger numbers were jumping because of the strong economic fundamentals. "There is buoyancy in the stock market and the liquidity situation has also improved. All this, supported by lower fares, is pushing up air travel and improving the load factors of airlines," he said.
The number of fliers rose month-on-month as well, with 33,000 more passengers flying last month compared to July.
