Airline facing hand-to-mouth situation: Jadhav

New Delhi: "We are leading a hand-to-mouth existence. The cashflow from our operations is used to run the airline. If operations get affected,
cashflow gets affected and so does the ability to pay." With these soulful words AI CMD Arvind Jadhav opened up to TOI, way past midnight on Monday, to give his side of the strike saga that has left thousands of air passengers stranded across the country for the last four days.
Jadhav, had just returned from a day-long schedule of failed meetings with striking pilots, on an evening abuzz with reports that AI was going to declare a lockout — which were scotched by aviation secretary M M Nambiar. That his meeting with the agitating pilots had been stormy, would be putting it mildly — pilots roundly accused him of acting like "Taliban" and precipitating a strike with his decisions, at a time AI was having record loads.
"The current turbulence has been caused by the attempts to cut costs, including wages. How can any one section be insulated from wage cuts when we need to do everything to save money and raise revenue? There is a freeze on recruitment, filling of vacant posts, and payment of arrears," Jadhav reasons.
