Mumbai: After airlines failed to comply with the order to stop charging high air fares following the grounding of Jet Airways planes, Union civil aviation secretary on Friday summoned airline CEOs to his office in Delhi to ask about the reasons for the non-compliance.
On Thursday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had written to the CEOs of scheduled airlines asking them to charge air travellers the tariff prevalent in the week ending September 6. The airlines, however, continued their profit-making spree after the order, forcing the ministry to step in.
"The ministry held a meeting on Friday to which all airlines sent representatives. They promised to return to the usual fares,'' a ministry spokesperson said. "The DGCA has also issued another warning letter to the airlines charging high fares,'' she added.
Civil aviation secretary M M Nambiar on Friday said the government had received complaints that air carriers were raising fares after the agitation by Jet pilots and that is a matter of "great concern and not acceptable to us''.
