The much-awaited part-animation, part-drama, The Age of Stupid, which premiered this week in 50 countries around the world, including in Antarctica, has an unexpected Mumbai connection.
The film features Nusli and Maureen Wadia’s younger son Jeh Wadia, as it documents step-by-step the launch of his low-cost airline, Go Air.
The 90-minute film on climate change made by Englishwoman Franny Armstrong portrays Jeh as symbolic of the title of her film.
Wadia is shown asking questions like, “How many people can afford a one rupee fare? I would imagine every single Indian can. Your rickshaw driver can, servants can.”
Correct. A low-cost airline has indeed cushioned the needs of the so-called have-nots but the film then argues that along with the wishes, what has also soared high is the percentage of our per capita greenhouse emission.
According to the film Wadia does not see a connect between the average annual growth rate of eight per cent with India increasingly becoming a wasteful and self-destructive nation.
“When humanity generally knew what it was doing wrong to the climate but did not stop it when [they] still had a chance,” explained a Green Peace spokesperson. This is referred to in the film as the “age of stupid.”
