Jet Airways (India) Ltd., the nation’s largest carrier by market value, said some of its pilots are striking by calling in sick, forcing the airline to cancel flights.
The pilots “resorted to a simulated strike by reporting sick,” the carrier said in an e- mailed statement today. “This organized activity is a planned sabotage of operations that will damage the airline’s operations.”
Jet Airways said some flights may have to be combined or canceled. The company will provide updated information using its Web site and call center.
Mumbai-based Jet Airways last year canceled a plan to fire as many as 1,900 employees, hurting plans to save costs.
The airline said Aug. 25 it got a strike notice from the National Aviator’s Guild, a newly formed union of some of its pilots. Three days later, the airline said in a separate statement that a labor commissioner had ruled that the union was under legal obligation not to proceed with a strike while a conciliation process was under way.
