New Delhi: Aviation industry regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed domestic carriers not to sell merchandise goods such as camera, sunglasses, watches and other electronic items on-board without its prior approval. A notice sent to domestic airlines by joint director general AK Chopra has said that such activities on board are “not conducive to safety of the operations as being carried out now.”
“DGCA has not granted approval to any of the airlines to sell merchandise goods on domestic sectors nor such operations are documented in operations manual of the airlines,” Mr Chopra said.
Low-cost airlines globally have been very aggressive in selling merchandise goods on-board domestic as well as international sectors. The in-flight sales contribute 5-10% to the total income of these carriers. In India, on-board sales of goods are yet to take off, an executive of a private airline said wishing not to be identified.
