Travel agents have their hands full

New Delhi: It was a busy day for both travel agents and other Indian carriers after Jet Airways' flight operations suffered a jolt due to pilots reporting sick. Seats booked at the last minute on even low-cost carriers went at exceptionally high prices due to the sudden demand.
Travel experts said that Air India (AI), Kingfisher and even low-cost airlines like Spice Jet and GoAir were charging anywhere from Rs 7,000 to 12,000 per head for different domestic routes. On the other hand, cancellations ruled the day for travel agents, who were either busy filing for refunds or rescheduling trips.
Travel agents said fares for other airlines shot up dramatically. ‘‘Fares varied for different sectors. For sectors to which fewer flights operate, the fares were up by more than double the usual rates. Sectors like Jamnagar, Indore, Rajkot, Guwahati saw tickets going for Rs 9,000 to Rs 11,000 per head,’’ said an agent.
