AAI paper recycling unit takes off

New Delhi: From now on, all waste paper generated at any Airports Authority of India (AAI) office in Delhi and NCR will be recycled and sold back to the organization as visiting cards, folders, file covers, etc. AAI's women's social wing Kalyanmayee started the organization's first paper recycling unit in the city on Friday morning and will launch two more in Mumbai and Chennai respectively by March.
According to Pankaj Sinha, GM, AAI, the recycling unit located at Nangal Devat in Vasant Kunj would be churning out 3,000 sheets of recycled paper, about 1.5 tonnes each day. "The A1 size sheets will be converted to files, folders, visiting cards, etc, and then sold back to AAI. Printing will also be done at the unit itself by those employed there,'' he said. At present, about 16-17 people, all belonging to the economically weaker sections, have been trained and employed at the unit.
Earlier, said sources, paper collected from the offices was either burnt or disposed off as garbage. Archana Agarwal, president of the organization, revealed the air traffic control building itself was burning three truckloads of paper every three months. "ATC, as a practice, stores documents for three months and then burns them since they are highly confidential. Now we have installed a shredder in their basement and the waste generated is sent to our unit,'' she said.
