DGCA to map carbon airprint in Indian skies

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked the public sector oil companies to furnish data on the sale of jet fuel to commercial airlines so that it can estimate the "carbon footprint" of airline operations in the country for the first time.
The move assumes significance in the run up to the Copenhagen conference on climate change in December where developed countries will be mounting pressure on India to cut emissions.
Director-General of Civil Aviation Nasim Zaidi said that India's estimate of the carbon footprint of commercial airlines would be drawn up within two months and work in this regard has already begun. DGCA also plans to hire experts to help out in the task and would be inviting offers from consultants in the coming days.
A senior official said DGCA has a detailed inventory of various aircraft in operation and this in conjunction with the data on jet fuel sales will be used to arrive at an estimate of the fuel burn which in turn will throw up the size of the carbon footprint.
The vintage of the planes will be taken into consideration as new planes consume less fuel than the older ones as result of which they also leave lower carbon emissions.
