The good earth: How green was your flight?

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which estimates a 7% fall in the aviation sector's emissions this year. IATA says it hopes for carbon-neutral aviation growth from 2020.
Some airlines, including AI, have gone in for fuel-efficient jets such as the Dreamliner. And some airports are going in for green runways, an innovative concept first seen at Boston's Logan International. A green runway uses an environment-friendly material which heats at lower temperatures than normal asphalt, using less fuel.
But that's in the US. What of Indian airports? Here, we use bitumen and will take time to adopt such runways, says P P Rao, aviation consultant to Mumbai International Airport. Interestingly, most Indian aviation or environment experts don't seem to have heard of them.
Sadly, Indian airports are yet to discover a green conscience. We do not go much further than compact fluorescent lighting, recycling waste water for gardens and using natural light inside terminals.
