Cachar: By next April, Silchar will be connected by cargo flights dedicated exclusively to postal services to ensure smoother delivery of mail to the burgeoning Barak valley.
At present, Boeing 737 aircraft, also known as the Logistics Post Cargo Service, take off from Delhi and then fly to Calcutta before hopping into Guwahati, Agartala and Imphal, carrying assorted postal goods.
India Post has three cargo aircraft, and will press into service two more to expand its cargo lifting points in the Northeast.
“Silchar is already a booming centre for trade and business, and, as a result, has emerged as a focal point for the mail delivery,” a senior postal official said.
Of course, there are reasons for Silchar’s popularity.
It is the gateway to Mizoram, southwest Manipur and Northeast Tripura.
The Arrow Phase Three postal delivery service was also inaugurated in Silchar a week ago.
