Veg flier finds egg shell in cake, airline fined Rs 50K

New Delhi: The state consumer commission has asked Indian Airlines to pay as compensation Rs 50,000 to a passenger who swallowed an egg shell present in his meal while travelling from Mumbai to Delhi.
According to complainant Keshav Kaushik, a lawyer by profession, while flying Indian Airlines on February 22, 2003, he had mentioned to the air-hostess that he was vegetarian. Despite this, when snacks were served he was served a cake and while consuming it a piece of an egg shell came in his mouth. The passenger became nauseous and also fell unconscious. The flying staff and other fellow passenger rendered necessary help and after disembarking at Delhi airport he lodged a complaint with the consumer court.
Kaushik further alleged in his complaint that 35 days after the incident he suffered haemorrhage in the abdomen and had to be hospitalized to undergo surgery. Meanwhile, Indian Airlines was extremely apologetic on its part and the airline officials also visited the complainant. Expressing regret and as a measure of goodwill, they offered him two free flight tickets of any of Indian Airlines' domestic or international flight. But Kaushik was not satisfied with this and filed his complaint.
