Dial, Met dept take measures to minimise fog-related problems

New Delhi: With the dense fog season a few weeks away, Delhi International Airport Limited (Dial) operating the Indira Gandhi International airport here, with the help of Meteorological department, has taken various measures to minimise inconvenience to passengers due to fog-related flight delays.
According to the Met department's assessment, the dense fog season, when visibility dips to around 50 metres, begins from second week of December and end by late January.
"Like last year, the Met department would be providing real-time weather conditions for passengers, airlines and the airport operator, so that there are least disruptions due to the fog.
"The data, on the met department's website, would be refreshed every two hours, instead of the current six hours, so that everybody gets real-time weather condition," said RK Jenamani, director of the Met Department at the IGI airport.
The IGI airport, during December last year and January this year, experienced around 167 hours of dense fog during which operations came to a standstill twice.
Such a long fog season forced the diversion of about 147 flights from the national capital to other airports, this despite the fact that the airport's main runway (28/10) and the new runway (29/11) have Category III B (CAT-IIIB) Instrument landing system (ILS).
