New Delhi: The government plans to invite bids for city-side development, which includes building hotels and convention centres, at 10 non-metro airports in the country by the year-end. The government-owned Airports Authority of India is currently in the process of identifying land at various non-metro airports, including Lucknow and Ahmedabad, for the purpose.
Interestingly, the initial plan of developing Udaipur and Amritsar airports does not figure in the new list of airports slated for upgradation. The request for quotation (RFQ) for the two airports had been invited last year but the plan was shelved due to opposition from the AAI.
According to an AAI official, the two airports are at a distance from the city and hence it would not be commercially viable to build hotels and convention centres there.
The airport operator expects to pocket revenues of Rs 1,200 crore from private developers undertaking city-side development at the proposed 10 airports. The city-side works, which include building hotels and shopping complexes near the ten identified airports, is expected to cost Rs 1,500 crore.
