Land for Dimapur airport extension acquired

Dimapur : After nearly a year of negotiations with the government, Aoyimti village council has finally accepted on October 16 to give away 130 ‘bighas’ (approximately) of land to the Airport Authority of India (AAI), for expansion. 122 houses will be stamped out of Aoyimti village, established in 1947. A consensus on the price of compensation comes after several rounds of discussions between the village council and the Dimapur district administration, negotiating on behalf of the AAI. Although the date for payment of compensation has not been finalized, the village council in its acceptance letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur has said it should be done during a reasonable time frame. But the biggest task before the village council and citizens, who will part with their lands, is that of rebuilding.
Aoyimti village occupies a massive area of land adjoining the Dimapur airport. The village has 327 households and community properties like a playfield, cemetery and a marketing shed. Aoyimti is also home to a blooming private school, several posh buildings and unoccupied fertile lands. A vast portion of all that will vanish once the deal is sealed and AAI begins construction. But since most of the citizens of Aoyimti want to remain with the village, the council’s biggest task is acquiring land to reinstate them.
The Aoyimti village council informed that there is enough land with neighboring villages and colonies, but it is not certain if the arrangement can be worked out to accommodate so many people around one area. Another problem is whether or not those people who buy land in other neighboring colonies can continue to be Aoyimti citizens. “It is going to be a very difficult task for us,” the village council chairman Nuksangmeren said. However, the council is working out ways to acquire land in one area, an extension of sort, so that the villagers will not scatter.
