In a setback for Air Hostess Komal Singh in the Air India sexual molestation case, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday (November 17) chose to tread a safe path coming out with a report that confirmed “assault” but did not take any clean stand on whether the employee had been sexually molested by the pilots in the cockpit on board a Sharjah-Lucknow-Delhi flight IC-884 on October 3.
The NCW report says Singh was “indeed physically pushed” by the flight's commander as a result of concern for flight safety, and that the chargesheet filed by Air India during the NCW's inquiry was "inappropriate". The Commissioner has stated that it has yet to come out with a final report on the incident, and that this is a preliminary report confirming physical assault.
Prima facie, in not confirming sexual assault analysts say the report essentially supports the pilot's version of events - which cannot be good news for Komal Singh or her family.
As part of its recommendations, the preliminary report strangely also goes on to recommend that "gender sensitization" training should be imparted to all airline employees.
Komal Singh in an affidavit has recently stated that she was being pressurised by certain members of the NCW to withdraw her complaint, and that her version of events was being ‘doctored’.
