Airplane accidents in 2009 dropped: IATA

New Delhi: India experienced several near-mishap situations but had no airplane accidents in 2009 as the safety performance of airlines globally in 2009 was better than last year, IATA said.
"If you were to take a flight every day, odds are you could go 5,058 years without an accident," according to the industry accident rate in October just published by the International Air Transport Association.
Till October 31, the total number of accidents, meaning hull loss in which the aircraft is substantially damaged or destroyed, were 56 compared with 97 during the same period in 2008. However, the fatalities were higher this year at 669, against 495 last year.
Not a single Indian carrier was involved in accidents where fatalities and hull losses occur.
Maintaining that the industry's hull loss rate was lower compared to that in 2008, the IATA said there was one accident per 1.85 million flights till this October compared with one per 1.2 million last year.
