Bangalore: Despite the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) repeatedly issuing directions to the airport authorities across the country to maintain a databank of instances bird strikes onto an aircraft, the authorities are not providing information on the incidents on a regular basis to the country’s aviation regulator.
At a seminar on ‘Bird strike on aircraft: challenges and the road ahead’ on Monday, Shanmugam, joint director of DGCA said that many airport operators were not providing inputs on the instances of bird strikes despite being clearly instructed to maintain a databank of such incidents.
He said that 241 cases were reported until October this year and airlines had suffered a loss of Rs 7 crore.
Among the airlines, Kingfisher had suffered the most with 60 incidents followed by Jet Airways (49), Spice Jet (30), Indigo (27), Air India (24) GoAir (7) and Paramount (1). “A coordinated effort by aircraft designers, manufacturers, operators and regulators is needed to overcome the bird strike menace,” he said.
