Navy against helipads on high-rise buildings

Mumbai: The navy feels that the government plan to have helipads on high-rises is a threat to national security.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sanjeev Bhasin, Vice Admiral Commanding-in-chief of the Western Naval Command, said the proliferation of helipads on buildings is a security threat.
"We are not in favour of private operators flying helicopters from the top of high-rise buildings," he said. "It is unsafe and can cause accidents because of the shifting wind patterns. It is also a security hazard."
Also, most of the buildings that might have helipads are located near military installations, Bhasin said. "Take the Sea Wind building at Cuffe Parade for example," he said. "The civic authorities have given them permission to build a helipad, but no permission has been given to operate the copters from that building.
The sheer number of high-rises in Cuffe Parade also raises the fear of accidents."
