Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd (MIAL) has awarded its managed services contract to the enterprise solutions business unit of Nortel Networks Corp. Under the contract, Nortel enterprise solutions will manage, maintain and monitor MIAL's IT infrastructure comprising the voice, data and wireless networks. Nortel will leverage its network operations centre in Bengaluru, which opened earlier this year, and a team of network engineers.
MIAL leases out the data and voice network, which is built entirely on Nortel equipment, to its various tenants, the airlines, restaurants, cargo handlers and others. These companies run their own multimedia applications round the clock. MIAL's network infrastructure has 5,000 end-points, and needs to be highly resilient and available 24/7.
In 2007, MIAL chose to build one of the most extensive and comprehensive IP communications networks ever deployed by an international airport in India.
In financial year 2008-2009, MIAL catered to 2.43 crore (24.3 million) passengers and handled over 530,000 tonnes of cargo. It plans to cater to 4.00 crore (40 million) passengers per year and handle cargo traffic of 10.00 lakh (1 million) tonnes per year. With such plans already underway, it is important to have the network running round the clock in a highly resilient mode.
