Snag-hit aircraft makes emergency landing on single engine

Chennai: The Chennai airport was put on ‘full emergency’ after a Coimbatore-Chennai SpiceJet flight (SG 282) with 121 passengers on board had to shut down one of its engines following overheating while nearing the city.
The Boeing 737 aircraft that developed trouble on its left engine made a safe landing on a single engine at 11.25am, said an airport official. All commercial passenger aircraft are capable of flying on single engine. But, pilots land the aircraft at the nearest airport as a safety measure.
The Airports Authority of India did not want to take a chance when pilot radioed the condition of the engine. ‘‘We declared an emergency. Crashtenders were positioned by the side of the runway and a medical team was was at hand,’’ said an official.
The actual cause for overheating can be determined only after engineers inspect the aircraft. An inquiry will be carried out to pinpoint the reason for the snag.
